New York Legislature Adjourns, Resulting in Numerous Victories for Dogs

By AKC Government Relations

Jun 26, 2018

The New York Assembly and Senate officially adjourned, resulting in several victories for responsible owners, breeders, and hobbyists in the state.

Thanks to your phone calls and emails, bills did not advance that would have regulated hobby breeders, created unclear regulations for dog trainers, or made dangerous and unreasonable changes to the state’s consumer protection laws.

Other bills that were successfully stopped included limits on pet and consumer choice, and restrictions that could have impacted dog shows and other events.

The legislature also approved some new measures that will make a positive difference for dogs and dog owners.  This includes Assembly Bill 4956/Senate Bill 7112, supported by the AKC, that allows companion animals to be permitted on public transportation services administered by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey when a state of emergency is declared.  This bill mirrors one passed a couple of years ago by the New Jersey Legislature and will allow owners who use this transportation to leave safely with their pets.

AKC thanks the many club members, exhibitors, breeders, and dog owners who took the time to contact their legislators about these measures.  Your efforts made a positive difference for dogs in New York.  AKC also thanks the Associated Dog Clubs of New York State for their efforts in helping advocate for dogs at the State Capitol.
