Hi Susan,

I didn't get a chance to send you my story on what I saw from hurricane Irene.  My story I am sure was similar to many, but it is a story that has touched my heart and mind forever.  So many families, young and old, rich and poor, a couple starting out, or a farm family of seven; lives changed forever.   While the recovery goes on, power restored and bridges reopened, I found out that over 140 families in Schoharie County school district remained without houses to live in, houses that were washed away in the flood.  While the world around them went on as normal, I realized many, many children did not have their home to put up their Christmas tree and no place to hang a stocking.  More sadly, these children realized their parents had no money to buy presents.  While I know the Schoharie community is strong in love, neighbors and faith, Christmas is a time for giving and I knew there was something I could do.

I work at an agency that supports individuals with disabilities.  We have many caring staff and individuals who were looking to be able to give during the holiday season.  We contacted the Schoharie Central School District to see what we could do.  The school district was very happy to hear from us and they were having an "Adopt a Family" benefit drive going on.  Well, this sounded just like what we were looking for.  Now, how were we going to be able to raise enough money in a couple of week’s time to make a difference?  That answer came quickly as people living in one of our residences wanted to host a chicken and biscuits dinner, with all proceeds to be donated to the Schoharie families.

The word went out to staff and individuals throughout the agency. What a huge response we received!  The dinner alone raised $700 and with other homes and staff donations we raised over $1,000!!!!  I contacted the school and they were so touched by the generous donations; the response they received from everyone to their "Adopt a Family" benefit was so huge that they were able to not only make sure the young kids were going to receive gifts, but they were now also able to include the older kids in the family as well as the parents.  We gathered up our donations and went to the school to deliver gift baskets, toys and many, many gift cards to popular stores and restaurants for everyone in the families.

I am sure we made a difference.  Not only were many children waking up to gifts they didn't expect but also parents, I am sure, where more than feeling blessed that their children were able to have gifts during this difficult year.  I am sure their hearts were warmed and tears of joy were shed as they watched their children's faces glow and saw happiness return to their families.

This is what Christmas is all about. A true sense of doing for each other.  Understanding that others needs are greater than ours. Knowing small acts of kindness are easy to give. ..................SUE SCHULZ

For the first time, I took part in the club’s Christmas gift exchange.  “It” got a box of goodies from Peggy Pick’s dogs in Illinois.

It is great fun. ………….................………………..LORETTA KELLEY

So today is the 12th birthday of the millennium pups born here. Two were named by Karen Stotka, Apu Noon Lennyum, & Multi Ch. Apu Peas an Hominy. I am not sure the folks in Europe know that Peas an Hominy is a play on Peace & Harmony.

Multi Ch. ApuPeas an Hominy at 12, Shakka.

Thanks so much for sending that along. I feel proud for having a tiny part in their lives J

BTW, I still have the pics of those two litters (I think it was two) up in my locker at work. They're all standing in a row like little angels with their ears up. It's great every time someone sees them for the first time!  Roos,………………KAREN STOTKA

Susan,

Both dogs managed to celebrate their 12th birthdays without too much hoopla. They may not run laps around the house like they used to, but they still seem to move pretty well and are way more tolerant of being locked into Elizabeth’s and Andrew’s rooms for forced “play” than I will be at that age.

There is a higher frequency of crotchetiness with each other than there used to be, but I do think there will be genuine sadness when there is no longer another dog to fight over food with.

Until then, enjoy the holiday greetings sent to you by the couch potatoes………………………..………………MIKE REED
