The Narehoods on the passing of Gypsy. "We lost our Fanconi girl, Gypsy, in November. Gypsy was the foster Basenji that came to stay 6 years ago. In 2007 she had her first seizure, but there were months between each one. Gypsy had been doing so well lately. It was totally unexpected. She must have hit her head on the arm of the chair after that last seizure. We had a really rough week before we accepted that she was not going to recover. Gypsy is snuggling with her original owner and happily chasing the bunnies beyond the bridge."

Dotty Cohen’s Jazzie on Dec. 1st. Dotty, on her Georgia peach, 6 yrs ago –“We’ve had JJ for 4 years now; hard to believe. I still have your note titled “Safe at home in Brooklyn,” written after we rescued her. It really seems true that she looks at us, still, deeply, with her golden eyes, & lets me know she is thankful.

Have to tell you how she conned me into taking her back downstairs. We had come back up, after she had her walk, sat in the sun, & did her busi-ness.  JJ just glared at me with her golden eyes, & would not let up.  I thought she had a need to go, so back down we went. Nothing to it, she just wanted to go back out, & had to have HER way!”

Eunice Ockerman on the passing of her wonderful Lulu.

Karin Shah on the passing of Sky. "Sky" Klassic Red Sky at Night 12/04/1995-12/30/09

"I lost my sweet Sky today.

I had wanted a basenji since the age of ten, but didn’t get Sky when I was twenty-five. She was charming and graceful and a pain-in-the-butt just like a basenji should be. Those dark eyes always made me melt.

I almost lost her when she was one and half. She was struck by a red minivan in front of my eyes. The left back wheel went over her pelvis, and her bladder was torn, but thanks to good surgeons she made an almost complete recovery.

She was fantastic with my children when they were babies, never reacted to kicking feet or grasping fists, but once they were toddlers…Well, let’s just say each of my children have been nipped.

In the last few years though, she has been the kids’ snuggle bunny, always eager to crawl into a lap.

Last month she fell off the couch and started limping. After a check of the x-rays, tendonitis was the diagnosis. After several weeks of bed rest and medicine she wasn’t better. She was slowly deteriorating in front of my eyes. I thought she was stiff from not moving and made an appointment with the orthopedic man. We took her in today and the vet said she was too bad off to be seen by the ortho.

After running several tests, all her organs came back fine, but they did another set of x-rays and discovered her front legs were riddled with cancer. The vet said he didn’t even think they could keep her comfortable. Nikhil and I didn’t want to make her suffer, so she was released to run free about five thirty this afternoon.

I knew I had to lose her eventually, but the suddenness of this has me knocked for a loop."
