Letha Hannah Kachel Howe passed away quietly in her sleep on August 23, 2011 at Balfour Retirement Center in Louisville, Colorado at the age of 102 years . She had a sharp mind and funny wit her whole life and witnessed a lot of technology advancements. She was born July 16, 1909 on a homestead in rural Major County in the recently formed state of Oklahoma to Samuel and Mary Kachel. As a child the family moved to Beaver County Ok by covered wagon. She first saw a car as a young girl while alone caring for younger siblings. As the unknown thing approached she hid the younger children under the beds for safety! She was valedictorian of her high school class (Beaver High, 1928). She married her high school sweetheart, Arthur N. Howe Jr. in 1934 and they shared 64 years of marriage. They lived in Wichita, KS where she worked as an accountant in a CPA firm for 30 years. She retired to Dodge City, KS and then Colorado. At her retirement facility in Dodge City she was introduced to computers at the age of 90, and quickly became the local computer center expert, teaching the younger residents how to e-mail. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four siblings and her son-in-law, Dr. M. Lynn Harner. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Harner of Broomfield, CO, and two grandchildren, Natalie Culver of Colchester, CT and Kevin Harner of Erie, CO, and one brother Dr. Harold Kachel of Beaver, OK. |
