Racing, Agility, Training.

Quote of the year: Bob Kamen, watching Scarlet being miserable running a Jumpers course at an agility trial :
"You should take her lure coursing & have her do something that doesn't make her genes hurt".

Racing in Rotterdam/by Yvonne ‘t Mannetje

International Derby in Rotterdam, June 23rd 2013 (oval racing)

For the 1st time in Basenji racing history  Basenji  friends from both Belgium and Germany came over to join us in this race in The Netherlands. All of us were very excited to have 9 B’s on the oval racing track. All the introductions and appointments were easy made in or via the Facbook Group “Basenji Racing Team”.

We welcomed Anne-Mie Goes and Tom Vanloo from Belgium, together with their 3 handsome and speedy males Abuluka Gobu, Abuluka Jaya and Ango Angari Tamis Tamtamy.

Anne-Lena and Karl-Heinz Pohmren came with 4 B’s, from which 2 georgious girls joined the race, Yulura Medea and Yulura Ruya. Gisela and Hartmut Schaber brought their speedy new racing champion (he just won the German title “Bundessieger”) Diego-Faceman-Stryker Shadows Of The Congo. Kadidja and Rüdiger Whippich came over with their sweet, charming boy Thando’s Ayano.

Of course our African Mystery’s Chamchela and Moyo Usono ti-n Abou Teka were entered as well.

Unfortunately the weather gods weren’t on our side during the morning, we had real heavy rain, and were afraid our dogs wouldn’t come out of the starting boxes, or run right back into them. In the 1st Basenji-course Ayano, Moyo, Gobu, Ruya and Ango ran their 350 meters. They were followed by Medea, Diego, Jaya and Chamchela in the next course.

The track was extremely heavy for them, the sand was very, very wet. The 9 of them had to battle for a place in the finals.

The score was kept as follows. The winner was given 1 point, number 2 got 2 points etc. The B’s had to run 2 courses before the finals and the winners of each course could start in “red 1” in the next course. Ruya, who’s nickname is “Rocket” was absolutely the fastest of them all! Diego was leading the 2nd course. By this time it had stopped raining, so they all ran faster!

Ruya (Red 1), Moyo (blue 2), Diego (white 3), Gobu (black 4), Jaya (yellow 5) and Ango (black-white 6) made it to the finals. As did the sun!

When Tom wanted to dress up Gobu for  the finals he noticed something was wrong, Gobu didn’t want to walk. As it turned out he had a split nail. We tried to give his place in the finals to Ayano, but the jury didn’t agree with that, they have to follow FCI International Rules. But I must say the 5 of them gave the audience (and owners) very exciting finals. Moyo had a super start, so “the rocket” was on 2nd position, with behind her Jaya, Ango and Diego giving it all they had in them.

But then Ruya showed us why she’s called “the rocket”. She just speeded up, very easily, passed Moyo half way on the track and took 1st position which she kept. Ruya won the International Derby in 30.74 seconds!! Moyo gave it all, but he finished over 1 second behind her, his time was 31.85. Ango ended 3rd (32.50), then came Jaya (32,84) followed by Diego (33.01).

At the end of this fun-day all Basenji’s were sleeping in the cars with a big smile on their faces. The owners also had a super nice day! So now some of us will meet again in Belgium, and 1 week later in Germany.  Already looking forward to that!!

Who's that taking a nose dive?

Fiddle finally dives in & runs a Jumpers course at a trial; lots of good things accomplished. Yay!

COPYCATS - Liner had an hour private lesson with Wendy today, & he learned a lot, concentrated really well, & was super happy. Fun that, at my suggestion, Fiddle came on the floor & showed him how she does the dogwalk. He had been trying it, but slowly. Wendy held him while Fiddle did her "I fly fast over this, run all the way down", demo. We switched dogs, & Liner ran right up there, all the way down, & back and forth and back and forth. Liner still learning the plank that moves (seesaw), but proved that he hasn't confused that with the dogwalk.

Training

Coincidence?

TREATS/Natalie Culver

On a lighthearted note: a dog funny. Our basenjis with refined tastes. Kunjo, the chow hound, has always preferred finer things but Obike's usually not "into" food enough to be a foodie snob. However, recently, I was enjoying some nice gruyere. Obike came quickly to my side in the kitchen all puppy dog eyes. I didn't want to share the nice cheese so I got out some "dog cheese" for him (our name for inexpensive white cheese we use for dog treats).

He turned up his nose at the cheap stuff. Obike spat the $3.99 /lb American cheese onto the kitchen floor at my feet and kept right on begging for the $19.99 /lb gruyere. Of course I gave in & shared. ;-)

Tamara Allen

Tippy, in training class, was likewise unimpressed with the turkey - all bright eyed and perky, looked up for her treat since she was such a good girl in the middle of class, then bleh - spit it all on the floor and gave me a stink eye. The class was roaring. Next class, yeah, I brought halibut scraps. She agreed she deserved halibut.

Natalie Culver

Our B's are such characters; part of why I love them. Early in agility training with Kunjo, people in class would be amazed at the selection of dog treats I brought to class. Usually two cheeses, chicken & ham, plus a "secret weapon" extra good treat like salami or dried lamb lung dog treat (so gross but he likes it...).

In return I was equally amazed at the silly herding bred dogs that would work all class for dry dog treats & one crazy toller went for fruit loops cereal. I think Kunjo would have run away from me, over to the chicken coop at training facility (farm/stables) if I tried to use fruity cereal!

Susan Kamen Marsicano

My dogs all work happily for Charlee Bears. Some people, feeling sympathy for Fernie, used to give her (poor deprived girlie) nice greasy meatballs, which she ate, & then promptly threw up, out on the agility floor.

I used to bait Blush, in the show ring, in 1973, with string beans.

 GROWTH PLATES/Andrea Stone

I literally laughed out loud when I read the sentence "[If you have been doing attention training] by the time you puppy's growth plates have closed.... he will be completely reliable off leash."

Now Regan is good but "completely reliable off leash"? Hmm. Not testing that. NOT a Sighthound person, this author.

Kipawa Harder - I'll have to have a sit-down with my dog and speak to him about his 'growth plates'.

Colleen A. Falconer - Clearly my basenjis' growth plates aren't closed yet.

Susan Kamen Marsicano - I always wait a few seconds until they are completely reliable before I say, "Come Front" in a low voice, which is their recall signal.

It works that way.
