AU REVOIR DEAR CHUTE (R.I.P. AT TMAC AGILITY TRIAL)

After concerns raised by the Agility community involving the safety of the collapsed tunnel, UKI, USDAA, and AKC Agility have suspended the use of this obstacle.

Message from Carrie DeYoung, Director of Agility:

This past week, the AKC Agility department held their annual field representative meeting. During the meeting, the staff reviewed concerns raised by the Agility community involving the collapsed tunnel. This obstacle has been shown to cause issues as performances have become faster and higher level classes have become more complex.

After their review, the Agility Field Representatives agreed unanimously to suspend the use of the collapsed tunnel effective immediately. Based upon the Agility department's recommendation, Sports and Events Senior Management contacted the AKC Board of Directors to request immediate action. The Board concurred that the concern regarding the safety of the dogs was the first priority.

As of August 30, 2016 the AKC will suspend the use of the collapsed tunnel in all courses until the concerns can be resolved. Judges will be contacted by their Field Representative to review how to adopt this immediate change.
Thank you to the Agility community for working in partnership with AKC to bring positive changes to our sport.

The "collapsed tunnel" or chute was quite long for some time.

In 2012, AKC did reduce the length of the chute fabric to 6 feet.

Here's a MEMORY LANE of our basenjis, and the chute.

I must admit that they all seem to have loved this obstacle. Puppy Gilda was having so much fun learning to do it, and then it was gone. Pooh, she says.

Teaching Back Up. . .

Andrea Stone SHARED this video from eileenanddogs that is a very useful tool for teaching backing up.

Ed - {I'd use the clicker also, but I'd start in baby steps, as I am not sure all basenjis would like the 'paraphernalia' of being stuck between two obstacles. My dogs back away from me a lot, walking backwards. I'd click that, give it a name. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Marking when they do it. Then see if they'll volunteer it, then use the word. To get this at heel, I'd do the old way of asking for it along a wall.}
